The sessions and use of CD have a profound affect on the way our problems, whether past, present and future, are both viewed and dealt with. A major re-evaluation and shift takes place. The hypnotherapy works in an incremental way, it is a gradual and simple process that works at the pace that you are in control over to make the changes that you want to make in your life.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Clinical Hypnotherapy is not the stage hypnotherapy you see on TV. You will be in control at all times and will choose the level of trance and positive suggestions that you wish to participate in. Trance is a normal state, you will have experienced it before. It might be when you have lost track of time watching a film or reading a book, or driving home on ''autopilot'', in any of these states you have always been able to become alert to your environment when you have needed to. Hypnosis is the same, it is used to help your conscious and subconscious mind connect and focus on the outcome you want.
How many sessions will it take?
You will first have an initial consultation to identify exactly how SFH will help you, this will be approximately 1 hour. Following sessions will take approximately 55 minutes. The number of sessions it will take will depend on the individual, however as a general guide positive changes can commonly be achieved between 3-5 sessions. If it is to treat clinical anxiety or depression, it is more likely to be 9-12 sessions. To stop smoking would be one single 2hour session.
How much does hypnotherapy cost?
A one hour hypnotherapy sessions costs £60 per session. A one off quit smoking session is a two hour session which costs £130 at a student rate.
Is hypnotherapy safe?
Yes. Nobody can be hypnotised against their will and even when in trance, people can still reject any of the suggestions given if they feel they are not appropriate. The therapist uses the initial consultation to identify what it is you want to achieve and help your sub-conscious and conscious mind agree on what you do want.
The British Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis states ''In therapy, hypnosis usually involves the person experiencing a sense of deep relaxation with their attention narrowed down and focused on the appropriate suggestions made by the therapist''.
What’s your policy on confidentiality?
Our sessions are confidential. I work within the ethical standards of my professional organisations, such as the NCH, ASFH and CNCH.
The only circumstances in which I would disclose anything you told me would be if I were legally obliged to do so, or if there were overwhelming concerns for your immediate safety, or that of another person. In practice, this only happens if there are the gravest of concerns, for example, that someone is imminently suicidal, or there are child protection issues - the same as your GP. I receive ongoing supervision and support, and though I may discuss clinical issues in supervision to help progress of our sessions, I do not disclose details which would personally identify you.
I keep any session or assessment notes securely, within Data Protection requirements and you may see these on request.
Is there an age limit?
The person needs to be able to give their consent and understand the concept, therefore typically
from around 6 years upwards would be possible, however it will depend on the individual and their circumstances.
What if I’m not able to be hypnotised?
Hypnotic trance is a natural state which everyone will enter into naturally during the course of the day, more commonly known as daydreaming. Unlike the TV portrayal, hypnosis is not a necessarily a state of deep sleep. It is a state of deep relaxation, where the conscious mind is able to link with the subconscious mind, with an enhanced state of awareness. The therapist can lead the client through to help reinforce the goals discussed in the initial consultation. It can be a light level, such as when you are engrossed in a book/film or on automatic pilot when driving for example. It may be deeper, where you experience a sense of heaviness, or numbness, which passes when you regain full alertness. Either way you will have a sense of being relaxed. Because we are all able to relax to varying degrees and the level of experienced ''trance'' does not impact on the positive suggestions that are used during hypnosis you will be able to benefit. I have seen with many clients their ability to relax and go into ''trance'' improves with practise. Those who are use to meditation, yoga or similar techniques are able to make the transition particularly well. Recent studies have also shown those with good focus and concentration also benefit well.
Will I need to do anything else apart from attend the session with the practitioner?
Yes, you will be given a CD/Audio recording and you will listen to it each night before you go to sleep. This will reinforce the good work we have done in the sessions together. The changes you want to achieve can be helped with SFH, you will need to want to make the changes. It is unlikely to work if you are attending to please someone else for example.
How does hypnosis work?
Hypnosis allows our conscious and subconscious minds to work together. If you can recall a time where you logically (conscious mind) know you should not do something, but have done it any way (subconscious mind) this is a good example, such as wanting another biscuit but knowing you don''t really need one! This is because humans have their original primitive mind, from which very important survival patterns and templates have evolved and to some degree are still needed today. However as humans have evolved we also now have a part of the brain that is intellectual and rational, known as the cerebral cortex. This is the part of the brain that we can use to deal with situations appropriately and logically, therefore use to adjust inappropriate behaviour. Some of these inappropriate behaviour or feeling appear as a result of templates or processes in the primitive mind and do not serve us well in modern times. Having a ''flight or fight'' approach when a bill arrives through the post, or when you are asked to do a presentation, is not an appropriate response but by using current knowledge of how the brain works, we can re-focus the attention, or re-create new templates from which we can live our lives in a positive way in the future.
I don''t like talking about the past, but it is holding me back. I don''t want to keep discussing it, can you still help?
Yes, will are looking at the present and future solutions for you. We do not necessarily need to go into your past to achieve this. If dealing with a phobia or similar we may need to revisit an old memory, but you do not have to explain it to me, if you do not wish. I can help you recall the memory in a disassociated state and lead you through the process to remove the negative template currently being held by your subconscious. This eventually will remove any negative emotion or feelings associated with this event. Once the old memory/fear/template is dissolved, we would work together to re-build a new template for you.
